It is acompetitive inhibitor of the enzyme thymidylate synthase, which is involved inDNA synthesis.

Thisinhibition can lead to cell death in cancer cells.

6-Amino-1-methyluracil is currently beinginvestigated in clinical trials for the treatment of leukemia and othercancers.
